FAQs about us

  • If I want to start a library, what must I do?- Establishing a library is a journey, and we would be happy to walk it with you. The first step is a pre-installation assessment form which enables us to gauge the students’ reading habits, academic performance and the school’s capacity to maintain a library. The headteacher of the school fills out this form. Email us at info@startalibrary.org, and we will share the form with you.
  • How many books does a school receive? – We strive to achieve a ratio of 1 child:1 book, but the minimum is 1000 books.
  • How much does one book cost? – The average cost of a book is KES. 499
  • What kind of books do you provide? – Our focus is on storybooks written by local publishers, based on local stories and narratives in English and Kiswahili.
  • Which schools qualify for the library establishment? – All public primary schools with no library facility.
  • I want to start a library, but I have my 0wn books. Can they form the library collection? – Yes, they can. First, however, we will need to personally inspect and gauge the books to ensure they are appropriate for the children’s reading level and are not too tattered.
  • Why do I have to buy books only from you? – We have created a comprehensive book list of age-appropriate storybooks and categorized them into different reading levels. We also stamp and code our books, ensuring each book is traceable and making record-keeping easy for the teacher-librarians.
  • How do you ensure your books are child friendly? – All books are analyzed and graded to ensure they are age-appropriate and have effective content for learning.
  • I signed up as a Reading Ambassador but don’t know what I’m supposed to do now – Thank you for signing up as a Reading Ambassador. As a Reading Ambassador, your role is to spread the ‘gospel’ of reading far and wide. We might also call upon you to support a library financially or even by attending a library launch. Please share your location, and we’ll inform you of any reading activities scheduled in the area.
  • Apart from money, can I donate anything else to Start-a-Library? Yes, we conduct various reading promotion activities in schools and we are always looking for volunteers to assist us.
  • Anyone I can get in touch with? Yes, please send an email to Dafrose, the fundraising and partnership officer, at info@startalibrary.org or
Eric, the monitoring and evaluation officer, at eric@startalibrary.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
